The Dermatopathology unit provides processing, reading, and diagnosis of pathology slides done in the center or referred for consultation from outside the center. A wide range of ordinary and special stains are available. Those slides that need immunofluorescence processing and reading are sent to the Immunodermatology unit in the center. 

The unit also provides dermatopathology teaching through a multiviewer microscope that enables 9 persons to view pathology slides simultaneously.

Routine, special stains, direct and indirect immunofluorescence, and immuno-histochemical staining are done as indicated. If a procedure is not available in the center, the specimen (or tissue block) is sent to the Pathology department at Sabah Hospital, to Kuwait Cancer Center, or to the Faculty of Medicine for processing. 

All patient information and pathology reports should be entered into the computer system by the secretary working in the pathology unit. A printout of the pathology report should be signed by the doctor in charge of the pathology unit.

The unit  provides diagnostic facilities essential for autoimmune bullous diseases

The tests performed in immunodermatology lab:

  1. Direct immunofluorescence test using patient’s skin biopsy( DIF IgG, IgM, IgA, C3, C4, Fib, Salt-split skin test from biopsy)
  2. Indirect immunofluorescence test using patient’s serum. Different substrates are used depending on the case:
  • Monkey esophagus
  • Normal human skin
  • Human split skin
  • HEP-2 cells for ANA screening tests
  1. ELISA:

A. Anti-Pemphigus antibodies: 

  • Desmoglein 1 (DsG1)
  • Desmoglein 3 (DsG3)

B. Anti Bullous Pemphigoid antibodies:

  • BP 180  kd
  • BP  230 kd
  1. Direct smear to diagnose cases of Leishmaniasis The unit receives cases from our OPD as well as from all other centers, as most of the tests are performed solely in our lab. If a test is not available in our lab, we send the specimen to the Behbehani Center immunology lab or the Faculty of Medicine.
  2. ANA test using Hep-2 cell substrate
  3. dsDNA test- ELISA
  4. ENA test- INNO-LIA test for 13 nuclear antigens
  5. Circulating immune complexes
  6. Antigen Mapping for Epidermolysis Bullosa-( Collagen type VII, Collagen type IV, Keratin 14, Integrin alpha6, Integrin beta4, Plectin, BP 180).

Dermato-Mycology

Mycology lab in the center provides microscopic examination and cultivation of patients suffering from mycotic infections due to dermatophytes, yeasts, and moulds. This unit receives sample from Sunday to Thursday.  The unit provides diagnostic facilities essential for fungal diseases of the skin including direct scrapings and cultures. A detailed referral form should be completed by the referring dermatologist. Mycology report should be signed out by the doctor in-charge of the mycology unit.
